Why go
Port Lucaya Marketplace is Freeport’s open-air hub for shopping, eating and evening entertainment, and the operator calls it the largest shopping, dining and entertainment facility of its kind in the Bahamas. It sits on 9½ acres along Sea Horse Road in the Lucayan Strip, Grand Bahama’s main tourist stretch, so it works as a half-day wander on its own or as an evening stop after a day at the beach. There is no admission fee. It is a free, open-air complex you walk through like a town square, not a ticketed attraction.
The marketplace is also the social centre of the strip after dark. Market Square, at its heart, runs live Bahamian and international music through the evening, and the venue draws a mix of cruise-ship day-trippers and guests staying at the nearby Grand Bahama hotels.
What you will see
Shopping is the main draw. The marketplace holds over forty specialty stores and boutiques selling jewellery, watches, perfume and designer goods, alongside two straw markets and two craft centres where local vendors sell handmade baskets, woodwork and souvenirs; the operator counts more than 120 handicraft and straw vendors in total. Duty-free shopping is on offer for visitors who qualify, and smaller stands sell Bahamian treats such as conch dishes and tropical drinks between the bigger stores.
Food and drink get their own share of the space: the complex has eleven restaurants covering everything from casual conch shacks to sit-down dining, plus eleven bars and lounges and standalone spots such as a chocolate factory, a bakery and an ice cream parlour. Families travelling with children have an indoor playground and a game room to fall back on between shops, and two spas on site offer nail and beauty treatments if you want a break from walking.
For something more active, three watersports operators run tours out of the marketplace, and the operator notes that the beach is within walking distance, so a morning on the water and an afternoon of shopping fit into the same visit without needing a taxi in between.
Visiting: hours, admission, booking
Port Lucaya Marketplace has no single posted opening time and no admission fee: it is a free, open-air complex, and each shop, restaurant, bar and vendor inside it sets its own hours rather than following one marketplace-wide schedule. In practice the stores keep daytime retail hours while the restaurants, bars and Market Square’s live music run on into the evening, but check the venue or individual businesses directly for a specific day’s times rather than assuming a fixed schedule.
Getting there
The marketplace sits on Sea Horse Road in the Lucayan Strip, Grand Bahama’s main resort and tourism corridor, about 12 miles from the Freeport cruise port. It is an easy taxi ride from the cruise port, the airport or any of the Lucayan Strip hotels, and close enough to several of them to reach on foot. The Bahamas getting-around page covers the ferries, flights and rental-car basics for reaching Grand Bahama in the first place.
Nearby
The marketplace’s own beach access puts Grand Bahama’s stretch of sand within walking distance, so pairing a morning swim with an afternoon of shopping needs no extra transport. Further from town, Grand Bahama’s other sightseeing draws, including the Garden of the Groves and Lucayan National Park, covered on the Bahamas things-to-do page, make a reasonable day out if you want a break from the marketplace’s shops and bars; both are a short drive from the Lucayan Strip rather than a walk.
